A bid to run Brecon’s Youth Centre at Cradoc Road on behalf of the community has been blocked by Conservative and Independent-run Powys County Council.

When Powys County Council announced plans to close the much loved facility, St John Ward Councillor Matthew Dorrance persuaded Brecon Town Council to lead a project that would keep the Youth Centre open by working in partnership with community organisations.

But their request to take on the running of the building and deliver services for the community has been turned down by Powys County Council.

Local Councillor Matthew Dorrance said:

“Brecon Youth Centre is a much loved and valued part of our community.  I am really disappointed that Powys County Council would rather see it boarded up than allow the Town Council to lead a project that delivers community services there.

“Tory and Independent Councillors who run Powys County Council are hell bent on asset stripping the services we depend on and they’ve refused to listen to local people who oppose the closure of our Youth Centre.

“I understand that Llandrindod Youth Centre has been given special treatment and will remain open and whilst that’s great news for Llandrindod, the Cabinet must explain why they’ve not treated Brecon fairly.”
