The decision to close Brecon’s Youth Centre is costing the Council more according to official figures obtained by Cllr Matthew Dorrance.

The County’s Conservative and Independent-run Council closed the Cradoc Road centre earlier this year as part of its financial ‘savings plan.’ The Council has since relocated the Youth Club to the former St Joseph’s School in Llanfaes.

At a meeting of Powys County Council on Thursday 12th July 2018, Cllr Matthew Dorrance asked the Cabinet to disclose the total costs to the Council in renting the former St Joseph’s site.

Council figures show the 2017/18 operating costs for the Council owned Brecon Youth Centre at Cradoc Road as £13,720 and the total cost to the tax payer for renting the former St Joseph’s site for the same period as £39,385.24.

Local Councillor Matthew Dorrance said:

“The Cabinet have serious questions to answer in relation to the closure of Brecon Youth Centre and their appalling grasp of public finances.

“The Council’s own figures show that the decision to close Brecon Youth Centre is costing residents nearly three times as much.

“It’s about time the Cabinet admitted they’ve made a mistake and worked with my community on a plan to reopen Brecon Youth Centre.”
