Residents across Brecon and the wider area are being urged to share their experiences of local bus services as part of a new campaign to improve connections between Brecon, Merthyr Tydfil and Cardiff.
Brecon’s Labour Councillors (Liz Rijnenberg, Chris Walsh, Matthew Dorrance and David Meredith) have launched a survey to gather views on bus travel to our capital city — particularly the links between the T4 and X4 services.
The survey is available online at: Take the survey on Brecon to Cardiff bus services
The campaign follows increasing concerns from residents about long journey times, poor connections and difficulties completing end‑to‑end journeys between Brecon and Cardiff.
Currently, there is no direct bus service, with passengers required to change — most commonly at Merthyr Tydfil or take the bus to Abergavenny and train onto Cardiff — which can result in delays and extended waiting times.
“We need to fix this”
Cllr Matthew Dorrance said:
“Residents across Brecon and the surrounding communities are telling me loud and clear that the current bus service to Cardiff simply isn’t working as it should.
“People are facing missed connections, lengthy waits, and journeys that are far longer and more difficult than they need to be. For many, this affects access to work, education, healthcare and essential services.
“We need a transport system that works for rural communities — one that is reliable, joined‑up and puts passengers first.”
The survey aims to collect real experiences from passengers, including:
- Reliability of the service
- Connection issues with the X4 and onward journeys
- Waiting times and missed connections
- Barriers to travelling to Cardiff and beyond
The results will be used to build a stronger evidence base for discussions with Transport for Wales, bus operators and the Welsh Government on how services can be improved.
Matthew added:
“This is about making sure the voices of local people are heard. The more evidence we have, the stronger the case we can make for change.
“I would encourage anyone who uses — or wants to use — these bus services to take a few minutes to complete the survey.”
